and

towel
with
his
hands

honorable
testimony

suds

water

his

he
emerged

the
towel

satisfactory

the
clean
territory
stopped
short

his
chin
and
his
jaws

like

mask

beyond
this

a
dark
expanse

unirrigated
soil

spread
downward

front

backward
around
his
neck

Mary
took
him
in
hand

she
was
done

him

a
man

a
brother

his

neatly

its
short
curls

dainty

restraint

whole
clothes

cleanliness

galled

hoped
that
Mary
would
forget
his
shoes

but
the
hope
was
blighted

she
coated
them
thoroughly
with
tallow
,
as
was
the
custom

brought
them
out

He
lost
his
temper
and
said
he

always
being
made
to
do
everything
he
did

want
to
do

Mary

persuasively

shoes

Mary

ready

children

Tom

his

fond

nine

half-past

church
service

children

for
the
sermon
voluntarily

and
the

The
church
's
high-backed

uncushioned
pews

seat
about

hundred
persons

edifice

small

a
sort

pine

door
Tom
dropped
back

step

Sunday-dressed
comrade
