the
steep-roofed
farmhouse

Suddenly
the
walls
seemed
to
fall
away
ahead
,
and
the
stench
and
the
wailing
grew
stronger
.
Willett
saw
that
he
had
come
upon
a
vast
open
space
,
so
great
that
his
torchlight
would
not
carry
across
it
;
and
as
he
advanced
he
encountered
occasional
stout
pillars
supporting
the
arches
of
the
roof
