facing
towards

Thames

this
point
the
lower
steps
widen

that
a
person
turning
that
angle
of
the
wall

unseen

any
others
on
the
stairs
who
chance
to
be
above
him

only
a
step

The
countryman
looked
hastily
round

he
reached
this
point

better
place
of
concealment
