One
may
easily
imagine
what
would
become
of
the
feeling
of
separation
that
had
inhabited
so
many
of
our
townspeople
.
The
trains
that
came
into
the
town
during
the
day
were
no
less
laden
than
those
which
left
.
Everyone
had
reserved
a
place
for
that
day
during
the
two
weeks
of
suspension
,
fearing
that
the
decision
of
the
authorities
might
be
annulled
at
the
last
moment
.
Some
of
the
travellers
coming
into
the
town
were
not
entirely
relieved
of
their
misgivings
,
because
although
they
knew
broadly
the
fate
of
those
who
were
closest
to
them
,
they
knew
nothing
of
the
rest
and
of
the
town
itself
,
which
they
imagined
would
look
quite
fearsome
.
But
this
was
only
true
of
those
who
had
not
been
burning
with
passion
throughout
this
period
of
time
.
The
passionate
were
taken
up
with
their
idée
fixe
.
Only
one
thing
had
changed
for
them
:
this
time
which
,
during
the
months
of
their
exile
,
they
would
have
liked
to
push
forward
so
that
it
would
go
faster
and
which
they
were
still
determined
to
speed
up
,
even
when
they
were
already
in
sight
of
the
town
;
then
,
as
soon
as
the
train
began
to
brake
,
before
stopping
,
they
wanted
on
the
contrary
to
slow
time
down
and
hold
it
in
suspension
.
The
feeling
,
at
once
vague
and
acute
in
them
,
of
all
those
months
of
life
lost
to
their
love
,
made
them
in
some
confused
way
demand
a
sort
of
compensation
through
which
the
time
of
joy
would
have
passed
at
only
half
the
speed
of
the
time
of
waiting
.
And
those
who
were
expecting
them
,
in
a
room
or
on
the
platform
(
like
Rambert
,
whose
wife
,
he
had
been
informed
weeks
in
advance
,
had
done
whatever
she
could
to
get
here
)
,
were
in
the
same
state
of
impatience
and
turmoil
.
Because
Rambert
was
waiting
in
fear
and
trembling
to
confront
this
love
or
affection
that
the
months
of
plague
had
reduced
to
an
abstraction
and
to
confront
it
with
the
flesh
-
and
-
blood
being
who
had
been
his
support
through
that
time
.

He
would
like
to
have
again
become
the
man
who
at
the
start
of
the
epidemic
wanted
to
leap
in
a
single
bound
out
of
the
town
and
rush
to
meet
the
one
he
loved
.
But
he
knew
that
that
was
not
possible
.
He
had
changed
,
the
plague
had
introduced
into
him
a
detachment
that
he
tried
with
all
his
strength
to
deny
,
but
which
none
the
less
endured
in
him
like
a
dull
pain
.
In
a
sense
he
had
the
feeling
that
it
had
ended
too
suddenly
;
he
did
not
himself
have
such
composure
.
Happiness
arrived
at
full
speed
,
events
overtook
expectations
.
Rambert
realized
that
everything
would
be
given
back
to
him
in
a
single
moment
and
that
joy
is
a
searing
emotion
that
cannot
be
savoured
.
Moreover
,
everyone
was
more
or
less
consciously
like
him
and
we
must
speak
of
everyone
.
On
this
station
platform
where
they
were
resuming
their
personal
life
they
still
felt
a
sense
of
community
as
they
exchanged
looks
and
smiles
between
themselves
.
But
,
as
soon
as
they
saw
the
train
smoke
,
their
feeling
of
exile
was
suddenly
extinguished
beneath
a
downpour
of
confused
and
bewildering
joy
.
When
the
train
stopped
,
interminable
separations
,
which
had
started
on
this
same
station
platform
,
ended
here
in
a
second
,
in
the
moment
when
arms
closed
with
exultant
greed
around
bodies
whose
living
form
they
had
forgotten
.
Rambert
,
for
his
part
,
did
not
have
the
time
to
look
at
the
shape
running
towards
him
until
it
was
already
crashing
against
his
chest
.
And
he
held
her
in
both
arms
,
pressing
her
head
to
him
,
seeing
only
the
familiar
hair
,
and
letting
his
tears
flow
without
knowing
if
they
came
from
his
present
happiness
or
from
a
pain
too
long
repressed
,
but
sure
at
least
that
they
would
prevent
him
from
verifying
if
this
face
buried
into
the
hollow
of
his
shoulder
was
the
one
about
which
he
had
so
long
dreamed
or
rather
that
of
a
stranger
.
Later
he
would
find
out
if
his
suspicion
was
true
.
For
the
time
being
,
he
wanted
to
do
what
all
those
around
him
were
doing
,
apparently
believing
that
the
plague
can
come
and
go
without
the
hearts
of
men
being
changed
.
Pressed
one
against
the
other
they
all
returned
home
,
blind
to
the
rest
of
the
world
,
apparently
triumphing
over
the
plague
,
forgetful
of
misery
and
of
those
who
had
also
arrived
by
the
same
train
but
had
found
no
one
and
were
preparing
in
their
homes
to
have
confirmation
of
fears
already
born
in
their
hearts
out
of
a
long
silence
.
For
them
,
the
ones
who
now
had
only
their
brand
new
sorrow
for
companion
,
and
for
others
who
were
at
that
moment
contemplating
the
memory
of
a
lost
loved
one
,
things
were
very
different
and
the
feeling
of
separation
had
reached
its
peak
.
For
such
people
,
mothers
,
husbands
,
wives
and
lovers
,
who
had
lost
all
happiness
with
the
being
who
was
now
buried
in
some
anonymous
pit
or
had
dissolved
into
a
pile
of
ashes
,
the
plague
was
still
there
.

But
who
thought
of
these
lonely
people
?
At
noon
the
sun
triumphed
over
the
cold
winds
that
had
been
struggling
in
the
air
since
morning
,
and
bathed
the
town
in
uninterrupted
waves
of
tranquil
light
.
The
daylight
hung
in
the
air
and
from
the
forts
and
hills
cannon
sounded
ceaselessly
beneath
a
still
sky
.
The
whole
town
rushed
outside
to
celebrate
this
crowded
minute
when
the
time
of
suffering
had
ended
and
the
time
of
forgetting
had
not
yet
begun
.
They
were
dancing
on
every
square
.
Traffic
had
increased
considerably
from
one
day
to
the
next
and
the
cars
,
of
which
there
were
now
many
more
,
had
difficulty
driving
along
the
packed
streets
.
The
bells
of
the
town
pealed
out
continually
throughout
the
afternoon
,
filling
the
blue
and
gold
sky
with
their
vibrations
.
In
the
churches
,
they
were
holding
services
of
thanksgiving
.
But
at
the
same
time
places
of
pleasure
were
full
to
bursting
and
the
cafes
were
handing
out
their
last
supplies
of
spirits
,
with
no
thought
to
the
future
.
In
front
of
the
counters
a
crowd
of
equally
excited
people
hustled
and
bustled
,
among
them
several
couples
hugging
and
kissing
,
not
bothered
about
appearances
.
Everyone
was
shouting
or
laughing
.
That
day
they
expended
the
stock
of
life
that
they
had
piled
up
during
those
months
when
they
had
all
put
their
souls
on
the
back
-
burner
;
this
was
like
the
day
of
their
survival
.
The
next
day
life
proper
would
resume
,
with
its
reticence
and
restrictions
.
For
the
time
being
,
people
of
very
different
origins
were
fraternizing
,
elbow
to
elbow
.
The
equality
that
the
presence
of
death
had
not
achieved
was
realized
by
the
joy
of
deliverance
,
at
least
for
a
few
hours
.
